I'm planning to buy a used car soon, so I've been reading up on what to look for during an inspection. It's surprising how easy it is to miss important warning signs if you're focused only on appearance. Even when shopping for the Top Japanese used cars in the UK, I think it's essential to inspect each vehicle carefully rather than relying on its reputation.

From my own experience, I've found that a shiny exterior can be misleading. I once looked at a car that seemed perfect until I noticed uneven paint and unusual tyre wear. A mechanic later confirmed it had been involved in a previous accident, which completely changed my mind.

Here are a few things I always check now:

• Uneven panel gaps or paint that doesn't match.

• Rust underneath the vehicle or around wheel arches.

• Dashboard warning lights that stay on after starting.

• Strange engine noises or excessive exhaust smoke.

• Incomplete or missing service history.

• Uneven tyre wear, which could indicate suspension or alignment issues.

• Signs of water damage or electrical problems inside the cabin.

I also make sure to take the car for a proper test drive because some problems only become noticeable once you're on the road. Spending a little extra time checking everything can prevent expensive repairs later.
